Asteroid Danger! Huge space rock hurtling toward Earth, NASA reveals

Could this asteroid pose a threat to Earth? Here’s what NASA says about this dangerous space rock.

NASA says nearly 100 tons of dust-sized space particles bombard Earth every day. A vehicle-sized asteroid hits Earth’s atmosphere once a year, creating a huge fireball, but it burns up before it reaches the planet’s surface. According to NASA, an asteroid the size of a soccer field hits Earth every 2,000 years and causes significant damage. NASA studies these space rocks using its space- and ground-based telescopes such as the NEOWISE telescope. When you think of planet-destroying asteroids, they only happen every few million years. While it may not be a planet killer, NASA has warned that a dangerous asteroid is headed for Earth today.

Details of the asteroid 2022 WH2

NASA’s Planetary Defense Coordination Office has issued a warning about an asteroid called Asteroid 2022 WH2. The fast-moving asteroid is scheduled to fly close to Earth today, November 24, at a distance of 4.8 million kilometers. The asteroid is already on its way to Earth, moving at a breathtaking speed of 24843 kilometers per hour!

NASA’s PDCO has issued an alert classifying asteroid 2022 WH2 as a “potentially hazardous object” due to the close proximity it will be to passing Earth. Although it will not collide with Earth, a slight deviation in its trajectory due to Earth’s gravitational pull can send it crashing into the planet.

Did you know?

In research published in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, MIT scientists have developed a new way to study the internal structure of space rocks based on how the asteroid’s spin changes as it approaches a giant celestial object. like a planet. This helps in understanding the asteroid’s internal structure as well as its weight distribution, which could be helpful in future DART missions.

The team of MIT scientists wants to apply this research to a near-Earth asteroid called Apophis. Although this asteroid isn’t expected to hit Earth anytime soon, a slight deviation in its trajectory could send it hurtling towards the planet.
